We invited local children to join in a double birthday celebration by designing and making birthday cards for two very special book characters. Young children from three to five years were challenged to create their cards for the 40th birthday of Eric Carle’s popular children’s classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, first published on 20th March 1969. Older youngsters aged six to nine years made their cards for Julia Donaldson’s ever favourite, The Gruffalo who celebrated his 10th birthday on 23rd March.
Over seventy children demonstrated their creative skills and all their wonderful entries were displayed in the children’s window of Hunting Raven for passersby to admire!
Ella aged 4 and James aged 5 won book tokens for their Hungry Caterpillar cards. Armani and Olivia both aged 9 won book tokens for their Gruffalo cards and a special prize was awarded to brother and sister Izzy and Alex for their collaboration; a giant collaged card of The Gruffalo. Poppy and Fraser aged 5 were highly commended for their Very Hungry caterpillar cards, and Charlotte 9, Tegan 8, Jacob 8 and Isabel 6, were highly commended for their Gruffalo cards. Vallis First School and Warminster Prep were awarded prizes for their libraries.
Caroline and John Birkett-Smith, owners of the Hunting Raven Bookshop said that they were delighted to receive so many entries and that judging proved so difficult that they formed a panel of judges with all the bookshop staff. The bookshop came alive with excited children, proud parents, grandparents and siblings at the prize giving on Wednesday 31 March 2009. ‘We truly value our young customers,’ said Caroline, ‘and seek to offer exciting opportunities to help them engage with books and reading. The birthday card competitions brought great enjoyment to a lot of people – big and small – in and beyond Frome!’
