Cheap Street FUN DAY – a first for Frome and for Hunting Raven Books.
On Sunday 7 June 2009, businesses in Cheap Street, Frome opened their doors and supported Jude Kelly’s (La Strada Café owner) idea for the first-ever Fun Day! The weather forecast was poor, we held our breath but the sun shone warmly throughout the day, welcoming visitors from near and far to a new Frome experience. Street-performers, musicians, dancers and more entertained outside whilst Hunting Raven squawked and flapped with excitement!
Our day began with a greatly anticipated visit from children’s author and good friend to us, Jeremy Strong who shared amusing anecdotes and stories to the delight of a shop full of young and young-at-heart customers!
Local author John Payne joined in the hustle and bustle of the street, enjoying the sunshine, whilst signing copies of his new book about the West Country.
The afternoon flew by with readings of favourite children’s stories – in other languages: German, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish. We wanted to share books with the great diversity of families who live in and around Frome. Willing and skilled local multi-linguists were tracked down to help us.
Philip read Wir gehen auf Bärenjagd (We’re Going on a Bear Hunt) by Michael Rosen. Bea read August I jego usmiech (Augustus and his Smile) by Catherine Rayner. João read Vamos à Caça de um Urso (We’re Going on a Bear Hunt) and Cristina read Quiero mi Comida (I Want My Dinner) by Tony Ross.
Tired but happy children, parents and staff called their goodbyes as shops closed their doors on a hugely successful day.
All of the books read during the sessions can be ordered through us, along with an enormous variety of titles.
