Pirates aboard at Hunting Raven

Sunday June 6th was Cheap Street FUNDAY!

While Frome town was buzzing with all sorts of exciting activity during the Cheap Street Funday, at Hunting Raven Books adults were able to meet author and historian Adrian Tinniswood and have their copies of Adrian’s newly published book ‘The Pirates of Barbary’ signed.

Pirates of Barbary : Corsairs, Conquests and Captivity in 17th-century Mediterranean has attracted a lot of attention.
“The twilight world of these Barbary pirates is brilliantly reconstructed in Tinniswood’s book.”
Books Quarterly
“Utterly fascinating… a triumphant success”
John Adamson
“Gives us ladies the opportunity to indulge in our most incorrect fantasies”  Sunday Telegraph

Adrian chatted to customers, signed copies of his book and also agreed to be on the judging panel for our children’s competition. It was Adrian’s book that inspired our Pirate theme for the day!

PLENTY of PIRATE activity!
Children were invited to come aboard and make pirate hats, colour in pirate pictures to take home, and to enter their drawings of pirates for the ‘Golden Token’ competition!

It was hard to choose from all the wonderful pictures – all were so good but finally after much consideration the winners were chosen. In the age 7 – 9 years age group, Laurie was the winner and Daisy and Ella were highly commended.  In the 3 – 6 yrs age group, Louis was the winner with Laura and Billy being highly commended.

The winners of the competition came in to collect their ‘booty’ of prizes, certificates and special bookmarks at a prize giving ceremony at Hunting Raven on Wednesday 23 June.

The Incredible Frome Scarecrow Trail

A unusual collection of characters appeared in shop windows all over Frome as sixty-four shops and businesses supported the Frome Carnival ‘s ‘Scarecrow Trail’.  This fun event was organised by the Frome Carnival Committee to raise the profile of Frome Carnival and to raise money for the event.

The theme was ‘Animated Characters’ and people on the trail were asked to identify the Scarecrows on display.
At Hunting Raven we rose to the challenge of portraying the cartoon character of Mr Incredible.

A life-size version was created and he was soon to be seen flying across the Children’s shop window!

Mr Incredible then decided he was off to search for PIRATES!  He had heard that there
was going to be a lot of PIRATE ACTION going on for children
(and adults) at Hunting Raven Books as part of the Cheap Street Funday
 on Sunday 6 June
