Authors and Books for Children – ABC Day

A new and exciting venture emerged at this year’s Frome Festival. On Thursday 14 July, over 200 children from Frome and surrounding area were treated to a series of special Literature events. Successful authors from across the South West came to share their writing and talk about their books.

Local schools had been invited to bring pupils and students to sessions at Frome Library and Holy Trinity Church Hall. They were entertained by authors who read extracts from their books and answered challenging questions from their attentive audiences. At the end of each session there was time to meet and chat to the authors.

At lunchtime authors and organisers gathered at The Cornerhouse to enjoy a much needed, delicious buffet provided by Martin Early. From left: Wendy Miller-Williams (Frome Library) Rachel Ward, Brenda Williams,
Jeremy de Quidt, Emma Craigie, Karin Campagna (Hunting Raven Books) and Peter Bently.

Throughout the day children and adults of all ages enjoyed a variety of children’s authors. In the morning Brenda Williams’ session was aimed at 4 – 5 year olds, Peter Bently ran two sessions, one for 6 – 7 year olds and another for 8 – 9 year olds and Jeremy de Quidt shared with 10 – 12 year olds.  In the afternoon, Emma Craigie and Rachel Ward led sessions for students of 13 years+.

Tea Time Treats!

After the school day Frome Library hosted a free event; Tea Time Treats.  Festival goers of all ages interested in children’s books flocked to meet a wealth of Frome’s children’s authors and illustrators.  Over tea and cakes generously provided by Frome Country Market bakers and served by volunteers, a dozen authors and illustrators showcased their work: Mike Brownlow, Annabel Claridge, Emma Craigie, David Gatward, Kate Maryon, Emma Newman, Mary McQuillan, Jeremy de Quidt, Andrew Saunders, Sholto Walker, Rachel Ward and Joffre White.

This first Children’s Literature day was a successful collaboration between Hunting Raven Bookshop and the Frome Library. ‘It was such an exciting and brilliant day for everyone involved,’ agreed Wendy Miller-Williams and
Karin Campagna, ‘We are already planning for the next one so look out for details early in 2012!’
