Jessica Wilker signing 9 November 2013

THE ABC OF MINDFULNESS On daily dealings with everyday feelings

We were delighted to welcome local Author Jessica Wilker to join us at Hunting Raven on Saturday 9th November.

Jessica, a Buddhist, Psychologist and author of many self-help books, was here to meet customers and talk about her books.

Her new book book offers an easy access to the practice of mindfulness.

It is written in a humorous way and makes an excellent gift for anybody interested in changing their outworn emotional habits.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Jessica Wilker, a Swiss author who moved to Frome in 1999, published the German version of her book the ”ABC of Mindfulness” in 1998. Jessica says that, at the time, the power of mindfulness was not as widely recognised as it is now and only the Buddhist community was aware of it.  The book has since sold many thousands of copies and has established itself as a classic in the German mindfulness literature.

Now, people in Frome can read for themselves what the European readers seem to like – the attractive illustrations and the easy and humorous style in which Jessica presents her seven day programme for mindfully dealing with emotions.

“As a psychologist, I know that all of us can be helpless slaves to our feelings. In my book I try to show how we can get better at recognising and accepting them and I point to the most helpful ways in which we might react. As a practising Buddhist I know how crucially useful mindfulness can be.“     FROME TIMES

Young Illustrators winners

Finalists in the Frome Festival Young Illustrators prize giving

The much anticipated prize giving for Frome’s first Young Illustrator competition took place on Saturday 6 July at Rook Lane Chapel, alongside a fascinating exhibition of 21 finalists aged between four and 18.

The competition, organised by Break 3, Hunting Raven Books and Frome Community Learning Partnership, received more than 100 entries from many local schools and as far afield as London.

Young artists were invited to design a cover for their favourite book about a journey or quest, and explain their choice of book.

Project manager, Jo Plimmer, said: “Not only were we really impressed by the quality of artworks submitted, but also the range of books chosen, from Swallows and Amazons in the under seven category, to Life of Pi in the 11 to 13s.”

The competition is part of a wider initiative with schools in the Frome area aiming to encourage reading.

“The number and range of entries to the competition was a real affirmation of how much books continue to be loved by young readers, despite, and interestingly alongside, the temptations of the XBox and Playstation,” said Judith Westcott, co-ordinator of Frome Community Learning Partnership.

The competition was judged by professional illustrators Sholto Walker, Mike Brownlow, Mary McQuillan and Nadine Wickenden, all of whom are exhibiting in Out of the Silence – Rook Lane Arts’ delightful summer exhibition of literary illustration.

The winners (pictured left) were: Elswyth Osborne (under 7), Elora Osborne (7-10), Niamh Dyson (11-13) and Jack Parsons (14-18).

Jo said: “Thanks to support from local businesses, prizes included art materials, vouchers for Hunting Raven Bookshop and Studio Prints, and a special behind the scenes visit to Berforts, Butler, Tanner & Dennis to see how a book is made.”

Out of the Silence and The Young Illustrators exhibitions will be on show at Rook Lane Arts until Saturday, August 3, from 10am to 4pm (Tuesday to Saturday) .

The Buildings of Frome book signing

Tim Goodall and Rachel Button signing copies of the new updated edition of The Buildings of Frome

On Saturday 20 April we were delighted to welcome Tim Goodall and Rachel Button who came to attend the launch of the third updated edition of their father Rodney Goodall’s book The Buildings of Frome. The book has just been published by The Frome Society for Local Study, with many new photographs. This book is essential reading for those interested, or curious, about Frome’s buildings, and the historical growth and development of the town.

Mr Goodall also wrote a companion book called The Industries of Frome where he describes in great detail the growth and decline of the woollen industry and related trades of dyeing and carding and how these were superseded by metal foundries, printing, brewing, vat making, building construction and later rubber, plastics and paint.

Rodney Goodall loved Frome. In 1963, as a young architect in his late twenties, he came to the town and settled here, becoming mayor in 1977. He helped save the Trinity area and Rook Lane Chapel. The father-of-two passed away in 2011 aged 76.  If you wish to learn about Frome’s buildings, or the growth of the town, this book is a mine of information.

Copies of The Buildings of Frome and The Industries of Frome are available at Hunting Raven Books.

JACKIE MORRIS

Jackie knew from at least the age of six that she wanted to be an artist. She watched her dad drawing a picture of a lapwing, making a bird appear on a piece of paper using only a pencil, and she thought it was some magic that made this happen. She likes the colour blue, cats, listening to music, reading and wished that she had a grandfather clock with a BIG key to wind it up. www.jackiemorris.co.uk

I am Cat A cat sleeps, curled up in a warm place, and while it sleeps it dreams…of being a tiger, flame cat of the forest; a cheetah … 10 wild habitats, 10 wild cats and one domestic cat are dramatically and beautifully illustrated in this unique celebration of the cat.

Tell Me a Dragon Everyone has their very own dragon, and this book describes many different varieties of the beast, showing in words and stunning pictures exactly why their owners find them so entrancing. They range from a dragon as big as a village to a tiny dragon with whisper-thin wings, from a snaggle-toothed dragon to a sea-dragon which races dolphins on the waves – ending in a page inhabited by every dragon in the book!

When Gill was small she wanted to be an explorer or work with animals – she became a vet before she became a writer! She cares madly about the natural world, its creatures and environments.
