Detail after stunning detail exposes rapture, fear, longong. These poems will make your battered heart beat fast again.” – Claire Crowther

ABCDays 2016: Authors and Books for Children Days

In response to World Book Day, we hosted our sixth children’s literature festival: Authors and Books for Children Days. We invited Sarah Dennis, Mark Ecob, Fleur Hitchcock, Angie Morgan, Michelle Robinson, Maudie Smith, David Solomons and Joffre White  who came from near and far to share their books and illustrations with the children of Frome. This year our array of amusing, super-talented and award-winning writers/illustrators presented their sessions over two days, visiting Hayesdown First School, Oakfield Academy, St John’s First School, Trinity First School, Vallis First School and Frome Library.  Once again hundreds of young book-lovers were inspired by their words and entertained by their antics!

We have author signed copies of ABCDays books at special event prices – while stocks last!

The Butler and Tanner Story by Lorraine Johnson

Lorraine Johnson B&T StoryLorraine Johnson joined us for a book signing of her new title, ‘The Butler and Tanner Story’. She spent the morning chatting to passers-by, customers and old employees of Butler and Tanner. She told us that one of the things she loves about the book is how it brings people together, the stories that people remember and share about their time at the Frome based publishing company. Butler and Tanner employed a large number of people from the town and you can pretty much guarantee that if it wasn’t you that worked at Butler and Tanner, you have a friend or relative who did!

We have signed copies in stock.

The Independent State of Wonderland – Frome Celebrates Alice’s 150th Anniversary

Frome left to right: Alice, Abi and Karin

To celebrate 150 years of the publication of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland we teamed up with Frome Independent Market to transform the monthly super-market into a wondrous day of Alice themed fun!

There were competitions and a parade. A Mad Hatter’s tea party sponsored by local charities PAC and Frome WI. There was a croquet lawn and a whole range of make&do activities – not to mention lots of fancy dress!

Market organisers said, “We’re thrilled that Frome and everyone involved in the market embraced our Wonderland theme so whole-heartedly; special thanks go out to Kate Bielby and SATCO for being so game, Hunting Raven for the inspiration and prizes, and PAC and Frome WI for hosting the Tea Party.”

Great Glee with The Gruffalo

We welcomed The Gruffalo as our special guest, having been awarded Julia Donaldson’s Independent Bookshop of the Month for April. The Gruffalo spent Friday 24th & Saturday 25th with us entertaining lots of children, their parents, teachers as well as the staff and friends of Hunting Raven.
The Sunflower Montessori Nursery School visited us for story-time with The Gruffalo on Friday morning. Children, staff and parents joined in the reading of the story and afterwards asked lots of brilliant questions. The Gruffalo answered with nods and shakes of his head, he also danced, hopped and jumped to everyone’s delight!

More story-time sessions took place on Saturday along with photo sessions with The Gruffalo. Generous donations raised £100 for Frome-based charity OpenStoryTellers.

Helen Moore Launch, Reading and Signing

April proved to be our month for events when we hosted another evening event, this time with internationally acknowledged eco-poet Helen Moore.  She was eloquently and thought-provokingly introduced by local author Lindsay Clarke.
Helen read eight poems from her new collection Ecozoa, explaining that she has taken inspiartion from Blake’s four zoas and through this volume of poetry creates a fifth zoa.  Before reading each poem, Helen set each in context – Sweet Pain – the most personal and exposing.  Without a doubt her poetry articulates a new future with a powerful, passionate and visionary voice.

Alison Clink Launch, Talk and Signing

The Man Who Never went to Newcastle
At only our second evening event this year, Alison was interviewed by local author-poet Crysse Morrison.  We heard how she started a diary on the day that she was told about her brother’s illness and stopped on the day that he died.  Writing daily became part of the grieving process and helped her to move forward.
Alison then used her diary entries to create a prose piece, later developing it into a memoir after discussions with agents.  The title came from talking with her brother about the ordinary things that he hadn’t got round to doing.  The book intersperses flashbacks from their childhood and youth, with the unfolding of his illness.  Its funny, sad, poignant and more.  An independent venture – Alison has self-published her book – the publication of which Crysse likened to the current ‘farmers’ market movement in a supermarket world’.
Alison read two contrasting extracts and answered questions from an appreciative audience.

The Rhino Farm Launch & Signing

Saturday saw the launch of local author Annabel Claridge’s fourth book, ‘The Rhino Farm’ here at Hunting Raven.

Annabel Claridge 4 April signing courtesy of Judith WhiteAfter reading a series of articles on the horrendous trade of poaching rhino horns, an impassioned Annabel did her research! To ensure the authenticity and accuracy of her work she spoke to professionals such as Dr. Jacques Flamand who, in part, relocates rhinos.

In an interview with the Frome Standard she said, “What I find so difficult to understand is that the rhino horn has no medicinal benefit whatsoever. The horn is made up of the same stuff as fingernails and yet people are prepared to pay huge amounts of money for it and rhinos are being mutilated – and for what?”

With her hard hitting story about rhino poaching and the race to save one orphaned rhino from suffering the same terrible fate as its parent, Annabel hopes to inspire young adults, and adults alike, into action.

We have signed copies of Annabel’s books in store, available for those of you who weren’t able to make it down on the day – while stock lasts.

Simon King signing 14 November

We were delighted to host a special signing session with wildlife documentary maker and popular television presenter Simon King on 14 December. Simon’s stunning calendar for 2014 was a big hit with our customers and sold out very quickly. The perfect gift for Christmas!
We were thrilled to welcome Simon back to Hunting Raven; he chatted to customers about his work and signed copies of his 2014 calendar and also his books!

Simon has been working in the field of natural history film making for over 30 years. Recently he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and he has been awarded the OBE for services to Wildlife Photography and conservation.
